International The term "brain injury" refers
to any injury of the brain. There are many types of brain
injuries, including the following:
- Anoxic Brain Injury – lack
of oxygen to the brain due to injury or swelling/bleeding.
- Skull Fracture – a break in
the bone the surrounds the brain.
- Contusion/Concussion - a
mild injury or bruise to the brain which may cause a short
loss of consciousness.
- Coup/Contra-Coup - a French
word describing contusions that occur at two sites in the
brain. When the head is hit, the impact causes the brain to
bump the opposite side of the skull. Damage occurs at the site
of impact and on the opposite side of the brain.
- Epideral Hematoma - a blood
clot that forms between the skull and the top lining of the
brain.
- Intracerebral Hemorrhage - a
blood clot deep in the middle of the brain that is hard to
remove.
- Diffuse Axonal Injury -
damage to the pathways that connect the different areas of the
brain.
Brain injury is acquired damage
to the brain, the result of either an external physical force or
internal cause, which results in an impairment of cognitive,
emotional, and/or physical functioning. Currently, approximately
5 million Americans live with a disability caused by brain
injury. Cerebral Palsy
can also occur due to a brain injury during birth. To learn more
