Coma is defined as a “state of
unconsciousness from which the patient cannot be awakened or
aroused, even by powerful stimulation; lack of any response to
one's environment.” The common cause of coma is oxygen
deprivation. It is said that coma is a state wherein there is
very little brain activity, and the patient hovers between life
and death.
Coma is not a disease. It is a symptom of a disease or a
response to an event, such as a severe head injury, seizure or
metabolic problem. Coma implies dysfunction of the cerebral
hemispheres, the upper brain stem, or both areas. During the
first stage of coma, patients are incapable of voluntary
activities such as eye opening, and speech. In the second stage
of coma, they open their eyes, but they do not follow commands,
speak, or interact with loved ones. This is called a vegetative
state. The vegetative state can last for years or decades.
The outcome of a coma ranges from full recovery to death.
Whether a person recovers, and to what extent, depends upon the
cause of the coma and the type and extent of the brain
